What Is Delta-8 THC?

Delta-8 THC is one of more than 100 different cannabinoids found naturally in cannabis and hemp plants. It is often confused with the more well-known Delta-9 THC compound, the main psychoactive substance of cannabis. However, Delta-8 THC is not nearly as strong in its intoxicating effects – it’s estimated to be 50% to 80% as psychotropic as Delta-9 THC.

Under the 2018 Farm Bill, the production and sale of CBD products has been legalized on a federal level. The main rule is that such products have to contain less than 0.3% of THC. However, Delta-8 THC is chemically different from the more psychoactive Delta-9 THC, meaning that Delta-8 products are not banned federally.

How Is Delta-8 THC Made?

In general, legal hemp plants contain only minimal amounts of Delta-8 THC, often below 1%. As such, you have to use different methods than in the case of typical extraction.

The process starts with extracting the CBD from hemp flowers or entire plants. After additional refining, the resulting CBD isolate is subjected to isomerization. Isomers are molecules that have the same number of atoms and elements but a different chemical structure. In this case, CBD and THC only differ in how their various elements are connected.

Isomerization works by changing the environment a bit (e.g., the temperature or pH) so that one isomer can transition to another. In this case, the pH of the CBD extract is decreased, and the CBD isolate changes into the Delta-9 THC first and finally into the Delta-8 THC. The resulting Delta-8 THC extract contains virtually no Delta-9 THC and can be mixed with different elements such as other cannabinoids, flavors, or terpenes.

How Using Delta-8 THC Might Benefit You?

There’s a large number of studies devoted to understanding CBD. Unfortunately, the research into the Delta-8 THC is not nearly as extensive. However, there is enough studies and user reports to suggest that the Delta-8 THC might be beneficial for you.

It Is Not as Overwhelming as Delta-9 THC

Many people use THC to relax after a hard day. However, the Delta-9 THC variant is very psychoactive, meaning that you might have problems focusing or being fully in control.

As Delta-8 THC is significantly less potent in its psychotropic effects, you can enjoy a calm state of mind and have fun without losing so much of your cognitive abilities. It also doesn’t alter your sense of time so much and produces fewer short-term memory issues.

Moreover, a survey conducted on over 500 participants from different states suggested that Delta-8 THC is less likely to induce states of anxiety or paranoia.

It May Provide Pain Relief

The same survey has found that a large number of Delta-8 THC users report similar levels of pain relief as with Delta-9 THC. This seems to be supported by a 2018 study conducted on animals, where mice that were given Delta-8 THC exhibited anti-inflammatory effects.

This means Delta-8 THC has the potential to be an effective analgesic, although more studies are needed to fully determine its effectiveness.

It Can Potentially Reduce Nausea

Both Delta-9 THC and Delta-8 THC can induce vomit-inhibiting effects. However, Delta-8 THC is much less psychotropic despite having similar antiemetic properties. Thanks to that, it might be a more reasonable and legal alternative.

A 1995 study conducted on child cancer patients found out that due to the effects of Delta-8, vomiting was completely absent despite ongoing chemotherapy treatments.

It Might Stimulate Appetite and Act as a Neurprotectant

One of the effects of traditional Delta-9 THC is an increased appetite. The Delta-8 THC not only has a similar effect, but it is even more potent as an appetite stimulator.

The study suggests that in low-enough doses, Delta-8 THC may be beneficial in aiding those with eating disorders. Delta-9 THC might too, although it’s much more psychoactive and therefore can’t be used as frequently.

Moreover, in an older study, Delta-8 THC has reduced the turnover rate of acetylcholine in the rats’ hippocampus area without changing the acetylcholine content. That suggests Delta-8 THC may prove to be beneficial to our mental abilities and memories.

Delta-8 THC Dosing

Finding the right dose depends on a number of factors, including the potency of the Delta-8 THC product and the weight of the user.

If you plan to vape Delta-8 THC, you should know how to calculate the right amount for you.

If the dose per puff is not specified on the label, look for information about the Delta-8 THC content level in the entire cartridge. Assuming that a 1ml cartridge lasts on average 100 or more puffs, you can then divide the cartridge content by 100.

As mentioned above, how much you need to take depends on your weight. However, you should feel some mild effects after 15 mg, while heavier effects require on average, between 15mg to 45mg.

You should be able to tell if you need to increase your dose pretty quickly. Vaping is one of the fastest methods of administering Delta-8 THC – on average it takes up to 15 minutes for the first effects to be felt.

Can I Get High From Consuming Delta-8 THC?

Unlike CBD, Delta-8 THC is a psychoactive compound, so being intoxicated after its use is absolutely normal. Fortunately, Delta-8 THC is less potent than the typical Delta-9 THC found in cannabis, meaning that your high won’t be as overwhelming, and it should be possible to focus.

However, if you consume too much, you still might not be in full control of your cognitive abilities, so pay attention to your dosage.
